What if, just what if Bilbo decided to stay in the Shire and basically die of old age like the rest of the hobbits, content and happy at home and he slips away peacefully one night, maybe in his sleep, in the arms of his loved ones.
And when he opens his eyes again, the very first thing he’ll see is a dark beard, dark eyes, and a row of pearl white teeth that gleam down at him. And then he’ll hear a deep but comfortable and familiar voice say something among the lines of “You’ve kept me waiting for far too long, Burglar."
And then Bilbo smiles one of this tender smiles and this time, this time around he’s the one that pulls Thorin into a hug and softly says, “But I am finally here, my old friend.”
